Your guide to the perfect food plot

We all know what a hunter’s goal every fall is – harvest a big deer. Seems easy, right? Well, maybe not as easy as it sounds, but planting a food plot this fall can help put you on the right track to shooting your biggest deer yet. By providing deer with the right nutrition to enhance antler growth, body size, and overall herd health, food plots are great options for hunters to step-up their game.

Let’s start with the basics. A good food plot is usually planted towards the end of July to early August. It’s also important to time the rain correctly (easier said than done) to make sure your plot will have enough moisture to thrive throughout the cooler fall months. The good news is that planting a fall food plot mix means that most years, you’ve had all summer to prep your ground, making growing conditions ideal for your plot to thrive.

When selecting a food plot seed mix, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First of all, are you looking for an annual or perennial mix? In other words, is this a one-time thing, or do you want your plot to come back again next year? You should also outline what your specific goals are for your food plot, such as if you want to hunt earlier or later in the season.

If you’re looking for an annual mix, we would recommend one of our best sellers, Green Beast. This is an all season mix, typically used if you plan on hunting further into the fall/winter months. Deer will graze on this brassica mix, eating the tops off until the first frost, and then digging for the sugary bulbs. Green Beast provides deer with excellent nutrition throughout the cooler months and will run you around $38/bag.

Another great annual option would be Final Stand, an early season food plot mix that is typically ready two to three weeks after planting. This would be a great option for hunters who are looking to hunt earlier on in the season. Final Stand also holds up well in the cold weather and can withstand browsing pressure. It’s a highly attractive and nutritious food source that will run you about $50/bag.

If you’re leaning more towards a perennial mix, we would recommend Whitetail Premium. This mix is great for damp fall weather and can be used as a forage source all year long. An added bonus – turkeys also can’t resist this mix! Whitetail Premium is a high protein forage that will run you about $40/bag.
