Alfalfa: The Queen of Forages

If you’re looking for a forage with high protein content, look no further than the queen of forages…alfalfa. Alfalfa’s ability to withstand challenging growing conditions and come back for more the following year is surpassed only by native rangelands.

Fall seeding of alfalfa should be happening now (August – September). Ideally, it needs to be planted in early August through mid-September when we are receiving rain and have cooler temperatures for the first couple weeks of the plant’s life. You want to establish a minimum of three (3) inches of growth prior to freezing.

Why would you plant now (fall seeding) vs. wait for spring?

Advantages of fall alfalfa seeding:

  • established for a full first cutting the following year
  • less weed pressure
  • may work in a double-crop rotation

Disadvantages of fall alfalfa seeding:

  • winter kills due to limited growth
  • lack of rain fall

From seeding irrigated acres as an intensively managed forage crop to improving the grazing production of a dryland pasture, there is a variety of alfalfa that will fit every need. We’ve determined which ones will work best for all production goals and strive to bring the top choice for each. If you’re considering planting alfalfa this fall, now is the time.
